Moldavites are a type of tektite, or impact glass, found in the Czech Republic and named after the town of Moldautein (Czech: Týn nad🥀 Vltavou) where these pieces were first discovered. Formed approximately 14.8 million years ago by the same meteoroid impact that produced the Nördlinger Ries crater in Bavaria, moldavites formed from debris flung high into the atmospꦗhere, where it melted, cooled, and then solidified into glass on its trip back to Earth.
Moldavites from Besednice in the Czech Republic — of which this is one — aℱre renowned for their high quality and sculptural appearance and have only been found as very small specimens. Examples nearing 10 grams in weight, such as this one, are exceedingly rare.
In addition to this lot, we are offering tektites from two of Earth's other recognized tektite strewn fields (in addition to Libyan Desert Glass): See Lots 116, 117 & 118. In addition, German Sand Spikes (Lot 120ཧ) are also the product of the Nördlinger Ries meteoroid strike.
Note: The current specimen features an unidentified collection number on the reverse: "WZ189."
