INSURANCE COVER SIGNED BY THE APOLLO 13 ORIGINAL CREW, POSTMARKED ON THE MISSION LAUNCH DATE – APRIL 11, 1970
Apollo 13 Life Insurance Cover (Type 2) measuring approximately 3¾ by 6½ inches with a NASA Manned Spacecraft Center Stamp Club cachet featuring the Apollo 13 mission emblem, depicting three horses traveling from the Earth to the Moon with the Sun in the background and the motto “Ex Luna, Scientia,” Latin for “From the Moon, Knowledge.” Bearing the 6 cent Flag stamp with a pictorial cancellation from Kennedy🍰 Space Center.
Directly f💎rom the 🎉Estate of Chuck Friedlander, NASA
SIGNED on the fronꦺt of the cover by JAMES LOVELL, FRED HAISE, and KEN MATTINGLY, the original Command Module Pilot of A𝔉pollo 13, who was grounded before the launch due to his exposure to rubella.
Since astronauts were unable to obtain adequate life insurance due to the high-risk nature of their missions, each crew signed a group of covers and evenly distributed them among their families for safe keeping prior to each mission. If an unfortunate event prevented the crew’s safe return, the covers would have provided a limited financial means of support to their families on Earth. Due to the infamous explosion of a cryogenic oxyꦫgen tank on their way to the Moon, the Apollo 13 crew’s families almost had to use their insurance covers.
Chuck Friedlander served as Chief at the NASA Astronaut Support Office, KSC from 1963-1967, leaving shortly after the Apollo 1 tragedy for CBS News where he was Walter Cronkite’s Space Technical Consultant from 1967-1969. Apollo 8 astronaut William Anders invited Friedlander to join him in Washingtonღ as his Executive Assistant when he served as Executive Secretary of the National Aeronautics and Space Council (NASC) at the White House, from 1969-1972. Friedlander also served as Vice President of the Board of Directors for the International Aerospace Hall of Fame, San Diego, CA from 1973-1980.
