With additional inscription: I'd like to say what I believe / history will record — that / America's challenge of today / has forged man's destဣiny / of tomorrow… And as we / leave the Moon at Taurus Littrow, / we leave as we came and God / willing as we shall return / with peace and hope for / all mankind…"
GENE CERNAN’S LAST WORDS TO THE MOON. The Apollo 17 mission garnered a number of record-setting achievements. These included three EVAs totaling about 22 hours of exploration of the Taurus-Littrow valley. Mission Commander Cernan and Lunar Module Pilot Schmitt covered that 22 miles using the Lunar Rover, and collected a record 75 pounds of geologic samples. Cernan piloted t🧸he Rover on its final run, during which he clocked a maximum speed of 11.2 mph, giving him the (unofficial) lunar land speed record.
