Originally from the perso⭕nal collection of Mercury Sigma-7 Pilot Wally Schirra

RARE ARTIFACT USED DUR💦ING THE MERCURY FL🏅IGHT OF SIGMA 7.

Schirra was one of the original seven astronauts chosen for ℱthe Mercury Program, the first to go into space three times, and the only astronaut to have flown in the Mercury, Gemini, and A𝄹pollo programs.

The history of this unique pencil is described in detail with Schirra’s Typed🌌 Letter Signed which reads as follows:

“This is my space pencil that I used during the flight of Sigma 7 on October 3, 1962. It was used to record flight plan updates, log instrument readings, and to make general notes.

"During training for my Mercury flight, the flight team put a lot of thought into how to keep items from floating around the cabin. This was the time before Velcro was in common use. One day while having dinner near the Cape, I noticed a pencil and chain used by a waitress. Bingo! That gave me the idea on how to keep my flight pencil from floating off and becoming lost. I got the exact same model she was using and had the ground crew place the Sigma 7 emblem on the retractable chain hub housing. The design proved very useful during my flight.

"Sigma 7 made six orbits of the earth during a flight duration of nine hours and thirteen minutes. It was the fifth manned flight of the Mercury program.”

Flown writing instr🥀uments from Project Mercury rarely come on the market.
