Description
ONE MILLION YEARS B.C.
Tom William Chantrell for Hammer Fiওlms Productions🃏, 1966
UK British Quad Style A, linen backed,ꦡ 30 x 40 in (76.2 x 101.6 cm).
In the now-iconic doe skin bikini, Raquel Welch towers over a pre-historic landscape dotted with volcanoes and toy-sized dinosaurs, blond hair flowing in the painted wind. To her right, a pterodactyl carries a miniaturized version of Welch away in its claws, flying over the film’s title printed in a screaming, electric pink. The cheeky, ironic humor imbued in this original British Quad for Don Chaffey’s 1966 feature One Million Years B.C. marks this poster as one of Tom William Chantell’s—one of the U.K.’s most prominent poster designers of the 20th century.
Archivally backed on linen, the present lot is a remarkably preserved eꦿxampl⭕e of a Style A one sheet for this cult classic film from Hammer Film Productions.
With a career that spanned over fifty years in the UK film industry, Tom William Chantrell’s most well-known contributions to the world of poster design are the Style ‘A’ and Style ‘B’ artworks for the 1977 UK release of the first installment of George Lucas’ Star Wars franchise.
The Style ‘A’ illustration for One Million Years B.C. can be considered Chantrell’s third most influential♒ work as a poster designer, as his depiction of Welch as her cavewoman character catapulted the young actress to ✤international super stardom—despite the fact that Welch only performed 3 lines of dialogue for the film.
