Watari Museum of Contemporary Art

Watari Museum of Contemporary Art

Tokyo | Japan

Cutting-edge artists from Japan and abroad

Opened in 1990 after operating as the Galerie Watari from 1972-89, the private Watari Museum of Conte✨mporary Art, known as Watari-um, stands among Japan’s most distinguished contemporary art institutions alongside the Mori Art Museum and the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa. A striking architectural landmark in Shibuya, Tokyo, its bold striped granite and concrete facade, designed by Mario Botta to evoke a bird's outstretched wings, signals the museum’s visionary spirit. Watari-um was one of the first institutions to introduce leading international contemporary artists to Japan, such as Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Donald Judd and Sol LeWitt. Since its inception, the museum has hosted major international retrospectives featuring groundbreaking artists including Joseph Beuys, Larry Clark, Henry Darger, Jan Fabre, Federico Herrero, Mike Kelley and Nam June Paik. Equally committed to fostering local talent, the Watari-um remains a vital platform for emerging Japanese contemporary artists.
