In the summer of 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first of mankind to walk on the moon. Almost five decades later, Sotheby’s is pleased to be holding a Space Exploration-themed  in July, timed to coincide with the anniversary of the Apollo 11 lunar landing. Space Artifacts Come Into Sotheby's Orbit

  • Lunar Sample Return Bag. Estimate $2,000,000–­4,000,000.
    Flown to the moon on Apollo 11, and used by Neil Armstrong to bring back the first samples of the moon ever collected ­– traces of which remain in the bag. A rare relic of humanity’s greatest achievement, it is the only such object available for private ownership.

  • Buzz Aldrin at Tranquility Base. Estimate $3,000–5,000.
    Snapped by Neil Armstrong, who is reflected in Aldrin’s visor, the large color photograph shows Buzz Aldrin at the Apollo 11 landing site. Considered one of the Apollo program’s most iconic images, it is signed and inscribed by Buzz Aldrin.

  • From the Personal Collection of Apollo 11 CMP Michael Collins. Estimate $40,000–60,000.
    Flown to the moon on Apollo 11, this crew signed beta-cloth emblem is one of the very few flown mission artifacts to be signed by Neil Armstrong.

  • Records File for the first flight made on Spaceship-Sputnik “Vostok”. Estimate $50,000–80,000.
    The official English-language Governmental report of the Soviet Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin’s historic 1961 flight, making him the first human to journey into outer space.

  • Vostok-1 Spacecraft Model. Estimate $10,000–12,000.
    A large 1:8 scale manufacturer’s project presentation model by NPO Energia, the company that manufactured the Vostok, of the spacecraft that carried Yuri Gagarin into space completing a full orbit of Earth on April 12, 1961.
