400 Years of Sensuous and Sacred Master Drawings

François Le Moyne (1688–1737), Head Of A Young Woman Looking To Her Left. Estimate $120,000–160,000.

This subtle yet sensuous portrait is one of very few pastels by François Le Moyne that survive today. The artist was held in high regard during his lifetime and his drawings were collected by the most discerning connoisseurs of the period, including Pierre Crozat, Pierre-Jean Mariette, Edme-François Gersaint and Count Tessin. The present work is unique within the artist’s practice – almost all of Le Moyne’s known compositions in pastel or coloured chalks are representations of men, with a notable exception being the extraordinary Head of the in the British Museum.

Pierre-Paul Prud'hon (1758–1823), Standing Male Nude, With Both Arms Raised. Estimate $150,000–200,000.

Pierre-Paul Prud’hon’s académies of male and female nudes are characterised by a high degree of technical refinement. Today, they are among his most highly sought-after drawings. The present sheet was was exhibited alongside two male académies at the seminal Prud’hon exhibition held in Paris at the Petit Palais in 1922. Prud’hon rendered a number of drawings on rich blue paper, but the present work is exceptional for retaining its vibrant and original colour.

Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres (1780–1867), Portrait Of A Young Man, Waist Length, One Hand In A Pocket, The Other Tucked Into His Lapel. Estimate $150,000–200,000.

This fascinating Ingres portrait from 1814 was unrecorded until its reappearance on the French art market in 2011. The soft treatment of the face, as well as the size of the sheet, compare closely to another 1814 portrait of an unidentified , now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Both portraits convey an air of ease and familiarity in the expression suggesting that the sitters may have been friends with Ingres.

Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, called il Guercino (1591–1666), An Allegory Of Matrimony: A Female Nude Lying On A Bed, Seen From The Back, Talking To A Bird In A Cage. Estimate $40,000–60,000.

This Allegory Of Matrimony is the only known example of the theme in il Guercino’s œuvre, either painted or drawn. The bird in the cage symbolises the bonds of marriage, while temptation and the pleasure of love are outside, personified by a reclining female nude, her head resting on a high pillow as she engages with the subdued bird.

Severini’s Autoportrait à la pipe, dated 1908, is part of the early avant-garde style of Divisionism, a unique colour-driven counterpoint to the French pointillism that ultimately led to the foundation of Futurism. Federico Zandomeneghi (1841–1917), Young Woman with a Bouquet of Flowers. Estimate $150,000–200,000.

Zandomeneghi’s Young Woman with a Bouquet of Flowers is among his many works that depict scenes from the life of the late-19th-century Parisienne. While fellow Italian expatriates like Giuseppe de Nittis and Giovanni Boldini favoured painting fashionably dressed ladies of Paris, Zandò (as he was known) generally preferred portraying his subjects in quieter moments. The compositional cropping and slight lean of the figure’s posture creates an intimacy between subject and viewer in a manner similar to works by Degas.

Giovanni Boldini (1842–1931), Still Life Of A Basket Of Cherries And A Silver Sugar Bowl. Estimate $50,000–70,000.

In the mid-1880s Giovanni Boldini turned to the objects around him for aesthetic inspiration – scattered paintbrushes, plaster busts, vases of flowers and furniture of his studio. In the present work, the artfully overturned sugar bowl (which also appears in his The Corner of the Painter’s Table, circa 1897, Museo Boldini, Ferrara) and porcelain basket filled with shiny cherries are rendered with incredible dexterity.

Annibale Carracci (1560–1609), A Hooded Monk Reading A Breviary. Estimate $50,000–70,000.

This handsome study executed from life is striking in its immediacy. A monk is pictured reading a prayer book, unaware of the artist’s presence. Scenes such as this are typical of Carracci’s draughtsmanship, especially in his early career, as he captures small moments or an action with extraordinary acumen. Although Carracci created many such studies, few examples have survived.

Karel van Mander the Elder (1548–1606), The Repentance Of Zacchaeus The Tax Collector. Estimate $60,000–80,000. Property from The Collection of Professor Egbert Haverkamp-Begemann.

Karel van Mander was a figure of immense importance in Dutch art and literature of the period leading up to 1600. This beautifully preserved study of the repentant tax collector Zacchaeus is a definitive example of late 16th-century Dutch Mannerist draughtsmanship being produced in the city of Haarlem. The present drawing is the design, in reverse, for the third in a series of eight engravings, published by the famed draughtsman and engraver Jacques de Gheyn and designed by Van Mander, which depicted Repentant Sinners of the Old and New Testaments.

Jan Lievens (1607–1674), A Group Of Standing Monks And Other Figures. Estimate $40,000–60,000. Property from The Collection of Professor Egbert Haverkamp-Begemann.

This imposing drawing, long misattributed to artists as various as Agostino Carracci and Jan Pynas, has only relatively recently come to be recognised as an important pen-and-ink work by the enigmatic but brilliant draughtsman Jan Lievens. This complex figure group renders two Franciscan monks in the centre, one of them praying, with various other elaborately dressed figures around them. As some of the costumes, particularly the hat in the right background, are anachronistic, the scene is possibly drawn from a theatrical production or depicts an imagined biblical subject.

Adriaen Pietersz van de Venne (1589–1662), Old Man Before A Fire. Estimate $25,000–35,000. Property from The Collection of Professor Egbert Haverkamp-Begemann.

As he did in the present work, Adriaen van de Venne often created illustrations based on the moralising verse of Dutch poet Jacob Cats (1577–1660). Here a wizened, bearded man is pictured trying to warm himself by a fire. Visual details such as the candle, burned down to the wick, provide clues that the man is nearing the end of his life. In near-perfect condition, this illustration fully showcases the wit, verve and technical mastery that characterise the artist's extraordinary skill as a narrator and illustrator.

This very beautifully drawn and compositionally complex, large sheet combines a number of distinctive stylistic element. Attribution of this elegant drawing has intrigued scholars for decades. In terms of the composition of the main figure group, which shows a mother and child with father behind, there are close parallels with Weenix’s Italianising landscapes, and it is among his Dutch Golden Age artistic milieu that the work is attributed.

Abraham Bloemaert (1566–1651), Recto: A Bowing Bishop Verso, Verso: A Standing Woman In A Cloak, Her Arms Raised. Estimate $25,000–35,000. Property from The Collection of Professor Egbert Haverkamp-Begemann.

The recto of this drawing forms part of a group of some 21 very similar studies of Bishops by Bloemaert. The vast majority of drawings from this distinctive group are similarly executed in a combination of red chalk and wash, and comparable examples to the present work are now housed in European institutions including the Albertina, Vienna and the Musée du Louvre, Paris.
