  This contemplative portrait of Saint Teresa of Avila was painted in Naples in 1644 by Jusepe de Ribera, one of the greatest masters of the Spanish Baroque. Teresa is pictured at work on her mystical writings, which were profoundly influential. Ribera has her looking serenely over her shoulder towards a dove, the symbol of the Holy Spirit and divine inspiration, while a skull rests on her desk, a reminder of human mortality.
