Anatomy of an Artwork: Marc Chagall’s ‘Juif à la Thora’

  • The Last Revolt
    The painting is based on a 1947 drawing, titled Der Letzte Widerstand, or The Last Stand, which appeared as a frontispiece to Joseph Opatoshu’s book, The Last Revolt, The Story of Rabbi Akiba, 1948. In the aftermath of the Holocaust, Chagall portrays a Jew rising above the village, a brilliant figure in white holding tight to the Torah, a symbol of his faith.

  • The Face
    The highly expressive face, with furrowed brows, deep-set eyes and parted lips, evokes the powerful emotion of the moment.

  • The Village
    A crowd of villagers and a cluster of houses are painted in brilliant reds, oranges and yellows. Looking upwards, the villagers celebrate the transcendent figure rising against the backdrop of parting clouds.

  • The Torah Scrolls
    A brilliant colourist, Chagall paints three additional Torah scrolls in jewel-like tones of blues and purples within the ark to the right, contrasting them with the red mantle of the Torah held by the central figure.
