  The Animal World

  The Animal World collection was created by Caroline Scheufele, Co-President of Chopard in 2010 for the jewellery house’s 150th anniversary. The collection depicts over 150 animals from all around the world, both wild and tame, using combinations of colourful gemstones to represent the entire animal kingdom at its best. Animals have often appeared as sources of inspiration in art, as demonstrated by Marc Chagall’s use of creatures to populate his enchanting and dream-like visions.

  Technique

  Ballet, characterised by light and graceful movements, is a deeply traditional art form that has defined the foundational techniques used in many other dance genres and cultures.The visual artist most closely associated with ballet is Edgar Degas, whose explorations of movement, form and perspective can be seen in Deux danseuses, one of the artist’s depictions of the behind-the-scenes world of the ballet. Ballet’s traditions, gently modified, have proved a continuing source invention.   Adventure

  French jeweller Jean Schlumberger travelled regularly to Bali, India and Thailand to absorb fresh ideas from different cultures and landscapes. Such travels inspired his transformation of nature’s wonders into objects of mesmerising beauty. These natural pearl and diamond ear clips, with the use of contrasting pearl colours, demonstrate Schlumberger’s desire to ‘capture the irregularity of the universe’. Similarly, Paul Gauguin’s curiosity and life-long interest in depicting the unfamiliar led him to places such as Tahiti and Martinique, where he completed Chemin sous les palmiers.

  As early as the first century AD, when Pliny commented on the comforting nature of emeralds, their intense green colours have been associated with soothing the soul. The transparent qualities of emeralds create spectacular visual effects when combined with changing light.   Pavé

  Joel Arthur Rosenthal (JAR) has built his reputation on the use of varied shapes and colours to construct bold designs. JAR’s innovative focus on pavé-setting, where stones are placed so closely together that the setting looks as if it has been paved with diamonds or gemstones, has become one of JAR’s most distinctive characteristics. Likewise, Paul Cézanne’s use of a palette knife to thickly apply layers of paint speaks to the artist’s inventive approach towards paint and perspective, as well as the power of unique techniques and oil paint in creating texture. These examples demonstrate their creator’s innovative approaches, that paved the way for new techniques and ideas in their respective art forms.
