  In the 1950s, animal brooches grew more common, and then became especially popular in the 1960s, with cartoon-esque motifs. Socialites and celebrities, such as Princess Grace of Monaco, fell under the spell of these funny and lovely brooches and collected them.   An interesting addition to a jewelry collection and one that would make a real statement, these Art Nouveau belt buckles by Piel Frères show the Egyptian revival motifs in the 1900s. The jewelry house made sensation at the Paris International Exhibition in 1900 with its fashionable art jewels, two more of which are also in this sale.
  
  The head of the company was Alexandre Piel, who worked with the sculptor Gabriel Stalin as artistic director. In their jewels, sculpted ivory was replaced by the new plastic material, celluloid, while copper and silver replaced gold. Critics approved of these substitutes, since the aim was to present art at an affordable price. The use of non-valuable material, also mixed with diamonds and gemstones was indeed very much en vogue at the turn of the century and became one of the characteristics of the Art Nouveau.
