  John La Farge, Magnolia, 1859–60. Estimate $200,000–300,000. To be offered in American Art, New York, 23 May 2018.

  Painted in 1859-60, Magnolia is one of John La Farge’s earliest still-life paintings. The artist first experimented with still-life early in his career and returned to the genre again in the 1880s. Magnolia demonstrates his ability to seamlessly blend botanical realism with an ethereal aesthetic. In 1869, La Farge painted a variation of this picture as one of his diploma pieces for admission to the National Academy of Design.

It promptly joined the legendary collection of the wealthy American businessman, Alexander Turney Stewart, which also included Rosa Bonheur’s The Horse Fair (Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York). At this time, Bouguereau and Bonheur were friends and neighbors, and it is likely that the lamb who posed for this composition was Bonheur’s own.

  Rendered from a birds-eye perspective, this remarkably intricate panel is an extraordinary example of an early Netherlandish landscape. Beyond a rocky foreground, across which travel the Holy Family on their Flight to Egypt, unfolds a vast and lush landscape of rolling hills and pastures, peaceful rivers and seas, quiet villages, and mountains. Although Joachim Patinir was once suggested as the author of this panel, more recent scholarship places the work closer to Adriaen Isenbrant, one of the leading figures of the Northern Renaissance in Bruges during the first half of the sixteenth century.

  Norman Rockwell, Shuffleton’s Barbershop, 1950. Acquired privately by a nonprofit American museum.

  Norman Rockwell painted Shuffleton’s Barbershop for the April 29, 1950 cover of The Saturday Evening Post. Executed at the height of his career, Shuffleton’s Barbershop is a technical tour-de-force that demonstrates the continuing power and resonance of the artist’s distinctive vision of American life. To create this work, Rockwell set the scene in an actual barbershop located on Maple Street in East Arlington, Vermont, where the artist and his family moved in 1939, and asked several Arlington residents to pose as the trio of musicians stationed in the back room including its owner, Rob Shuffleton, who plays the cello with his back to the viewer.
