Sotheby’s Global Head of Photographs, Emily Bierman, highlights two artists from the Pilara Family Foundation Collection, Dorothea Lange and Katy Grannan. Lange’s work comes out of a period of American history filled with hardship, struggle, but also perseverance, and these traits are most notably captured in the iconic portrait, Migrant Mother, Nipomo, California. With her Boulevard s🍷eries, Grannan continues the lineage of portrait photography, using her camera as a vehicle for dynamic expressi𝔉on and social inquiry by focusing on an overlooked cross-section of American society.
