Tenmoku (tianmu) bowls have been used in Japan since medieval times for zen meditation in temples and aristocratic homes. The abstract aesthetic appeal of these teabowls, reminiscent of spacescapes, and the depth of their ultra black glazes rendered them perfect for ri﷽tual tea drinking.
