Ms Hatton joined Sotheby’s in 2016 as Vice President and Senior Specialist in the Books & Manuscripts department. She spent the first decade of her career as a rare book and manuscript dealer on the west coast, before moving to New York to work for Bonhams for four years, where she founded and was made Director of its History of Science & Technology department. While she has expertise in books and manuscripts in all fields ranging from the 15th to 20th centuries, she has a particular specialty in early printed books and manuscripts, the history of science & technology, and space exploration. She has been responsible for the sale of numerous high-profile and record-setting items, including the bag used by Neil Armstrong to bring back the first samples of the moon ever collected, which sold for $1,812,500 and set the record for an American space artifact; the hidden wartime manuscript of Alan Turing for $1,025♈,000 which holds the record for any item by Turing; George Minot’s 1935 Nobel prize medal in Medicine for $545,000; the world record for an Apple-1 Computer at $905,000; a Naval M4 Enigma machine at $435,000 and the record price for an Enigma-I machine at $269,000; the world records for the two most expensive Charles Darwin letters at $197,000 and $125,000; and the flown Flight Plan from the Apollo 13 mission for $275,000 to name but a few. She is a member of the Grolier Club, the Bibliographical Society of America, the History of Science Society, the Caxton Club, and the Rare Book & Manuscript Section of the American Library Association. Ms. Hatton did her undergraduate work in History and French & Linguistics at UCLA, and has an MA in Early Modern European History with a focus on the History of Science. She has attended both the Rare Book School at the University of Virginia and the California Rare Book School, and is a USPAP compliant appraiser.
