Graham Greene was one of the most important British novelists of modern times, writing more than two dozen novels (many, such as Brighton Rock, Our Man in Havana, The End of the Affair and Travels with My Aunt subsequently made into films), as well as plays, essays and travel books. He also wrote the original screenplay for The Third Man (starring Orson Welles). Many of his novels have a distinctive espionage element. He travelled extensively in Asia, Africa and Latin America, sometimes cultivating the leaders of undemocratic regimes (these included Papa Doc Duvalier, Fidel Castro, General Omar Torrijos, and Manuel Noriega, the last of whom is recorded as having given him this gold Rolex watch during a visit). Greene met Yvonne Cloetta in Africa in 1959, and he moved to Antibes in the 1960s to be near her; they moved to Switzerland in 1990.
