This painting still seems to be stretched on its original stretcher and has more than likely never received any attention from a restorer. The painting nonetheless is in beautiful condition. It is dark but was intended to be so. The paint is extremely heavy in many places and some cracking has developed to the paint layer, but this cracking is not indicative of any structural issue, nor is it possible to suppress the cracking without a lot of unnecessary intervention. There is an area of heavy paint in the figure in the lower left quadrant that may have actually been damaged and broken. The work may be lightly cleaned, but it is not recommended to varnish the picture in any noticeable way. Some kind of attention to the instability mentioned above is advised.
