Condition
The paintings are richer in colour and more yellow in tone than the catalogue illustrations would suggest. The canvases appear to be striplined, and both have paint surfaces that appear to the naked eye to be in very good condition with no apparent damage or loss of paint, however there is evidence of a yellow varnish over both. Inspection under Ultraviolet light confirms the opacity of the varnish over both which impedes satisfactory examination, however there is evidence of a few old minor scattered retouchings in the sky, brickwork and drapery of the first. In the second the scattered retouchings are more extensive in the sky, brickwork and to a lesser extent the figures, though the fabric on the left appears to be for the most part untouched. Overall the paintings appear to be in good condition and they are offered in matching gilt wood frames in good condition.
