The popular poem tells the story of a strolling performer and his bear who are given a lift on a passing general's sledge. When driver and performer stay too long drinking in a tavern, the bear frightens the horses and they dash off, passing frightened peasants who believe the bear to be a particularly fearsome general. Works by Maria Kozlovskaya appear only ra☂rely on the market and much remains to be discovered about her career. It is known that she studied and exhibited at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg; most of her sculptural designs are dated to the 1890s and are usually connected with representations of animals or scenes from classic Russian literature.
