After the break-down of the alliance between Russia, Germany and Austria, both France and Russia felt the danger of being isolated in Eu🌠rope. Public opinion in both countries favoured closer ties and an official rapprochement o🍨f the two nations began. First, France came to Russia's rescue by providing financial loans thereby securing closer economic links. Soon afterwards, in 1891, the French fleet sailed to Russian waters under the command of Admiral Gervais and anchored in Kronstadt.
The present lot commemorates this visit, considered to be the first official step toward an alliance ♉between France and Russia, and was presented to the Admiral during the exchange of gifts between the two nations.
