憑藉洗鍊傳神的人物刻劃,陳衍寧備獲讚賞,1999年他曾應邀至白金漢宮替英國女皇繪製肖像。描繪名人以外,他更追求藝術性創作,融入東方古典元素,使其作品特色獨具。如《綠夢》即為其創作之典型,畫中柔媚的仕女身著精緻古衫,輕坐於長春藤下,前方刻意安排的植栽,與畫中主角對應,令人想起清代文人陳裴之在《汀煙小錄》裡所寫的「個儂吹氣如蘭,奉身如玉。」陳衍寧藉此將人物注入了悠揚的氣息與性格。
誠如藝術評論家丹尼斯.韋曼所說:「陳衍寧的肖像畫彌漫著一種炫目的光感,令人聯想起十八世紀以前歐洲的偉大畫家的作品。他運用複雜的技法與對細節的高度關注,設計出大師級的構圖,似乎要抓住對象生活中的一個自然的瞬間,為其造像。」畫中少女雖然衣著古典,但表情和身體語言皆洋溢青春氣息,其右手撥弄耳墜,看似漫不經意,卻為作品帶來攝影般捕捉瞬間的真實動感,而裙擺與鞋尖上的刺繡,則與花卉一同平衡畫面整體的藍綠色調,亦呼應了少女白晳紅潤的肌膚;在景物調度方面,藝術家巧妙地把吊藤和蘭花置於人物前方,而背景卻以深邃色調處理,這種既實而虛的安排,讓作品產生超現實的效果,使人物仿佛超脫時空,如夢如幻,呼應主題。
