Hairpins such as this were used by married Manchu women who wore their hair in two strands twisted around these large pins called bianfang. Manchu women of nobility wore a more elaborate headdress called a qitou, in which stiffened fabric was wrapped around a bianfang and fastened with flowers, ornaments and tassels.
