「就如懷念患離中的朋友,我常常想念花溪。」

畫家所謂「患難」正是他首次造訪花溪的時空背景,時維一九七二
年冬,政局仍是一片蕭瑟嚴峻,他與妻子往貴陽探侍岳母的病
況,並抽空去了花溪,逗留了個多星期。
幾位熱心友人相陪,「一同冒雨踩著泥濘的小道尋石板房,一同在
苗家寨子裡東張西望……」懷念的是這段友誼,還有花溪園林的
景色。當時,他畫了一幅水彩,「以岸上斜傾的老樹及跌入水中
的倒影作為畫面構架……每棵樹與其倒影並不完全能對上口徑,
有的樹失落了倒影,有的倒影卻又找不到岸上主體,虛虛實實,
都緣作者意圖布網圍捕蕭瑟之氣氛。」這就是他筆下「花溪樹」的
基本構圖。日後從水彩轉移至水墨,不斷衍生變化,濃黑樹幹的
直與曲佈局、背景風光的揚棄減省,以至潑墨般抽象手法經營畫
面,種種改變,反映了畫家憑藉作品「從記敍蕭瑟之氣到抒寫心
花怒放,從無聲進入有聲」。本幅寫於一九八一年,畫面較接近
一九七七年其筆下最早一幀的水墨〈貴陽花溪〉。
