余嘗畫菜，喜書此四字，因老于濁世，竊恐忘卻清白也。

白石老人出身農家，種植之事，日常慣見，筆端摭拾於周遭生
活，何有不存「蔬筍氣」之真味耶！他畫白菜，除配搭草蟲而取一
兩株入畫外，餘皆多一堆一叠，似收穫豐碩。而白菜以淡墨相間
出之，淡者成莖，濃者積葉，多是肥大豐腴，益顯厚重之狀。本
幅即取如斯手法，五株肥壯白菜縱貫全畫，頂端兩株卻倒置之。
如此處理，在打破佈局單調外，更切合了取題「清白到頭」。蓋畫
面上下貫串，乃「到頭」即貫串一氣之意，而「倒」「到」音近，遂
稍更易位置，平添其趣味！

至於濁世中不忘清白，自是白石藉畫以寄處身自警之喻。畫上無
署年，按書體風格，似屬二十年代中期之作。尺幅有異慣常而稍
呈狹窄，兼且原裝裱較短，似應求畫者特定之環境而製，故推為
東國好其藝者所訂，或不悖事實矣！
