上款：「翰臣」即甘作蕃（1859-1941），字屏宗，晚號非園主人，
廣東中山人。他以粵人居滬經商致富，任上海怡和洋行總辦、公
和祥碼頭買辦。好與文化藝術界往還，如康有為、陳三立、吳昌
碩、朱祖謀等常雅集於其愚園寓所。又熱心鄉梓文教，嶺南大學
在上海開設分校，他忝列校董之一。復嗜收藏，範圍涉及金石書
畫等。吳昌碩曾為其刻印多方；所藏〈隋劉氏猛進碑〉，有「廣東第
一古石」之譽。康南海稱他「好善而好古」，洵非濫譽！

註：任伯年鬻藝滬上，亟受時人所賞，訂畫者眾，甘翰臣即其
一。從傳世畫迹顯示，具「翰臣」上款者，俱屬其創作鼎盛期所
出。選題以翎毛走獸為主，蓋攝物生動活潑、色彩繽紛多姿，點
綴廳堂，氣派自生，且易於入目，甚合甘氏從商之背景。証諸
一八八六年所作〈牡丹雉雞〉大橫披，及一八九一年〈花鳥〉四巨
屏，皆精心所製，非耗重資，毋復得此，亦反映了翰臣品味趨
向。本幅非尋丈鉅製，惟佈局簡潔，置雙貓蹲伏垣上，或弓背，
或蜷縮，瞪目張嘴，呈相峙欲撲之狀，蓋顯伯年狀物攝神之功
力！
本幅構圖，同年另有一本寫於絹上，題曰「乙酉三月上浣」，乃〈翎
毛花卉〉十開冊之一，現藏中國美術館。兩本尺幅大小不一外，圖
中佈局，位置經營類近，畫家或頗好此稿，故同期屢寫之。
