註：白石好畫菊，折枝或伴籬者多，然栽植於盆缽器皿者甚少，完整滿盆則更稀見。他有題缽菊詩：「紙窄堪容鉢半邊，半邊須賣正圓錢。有人若問圓全價，帶土連花五百千。」可見畫家眼中，盆菊比折枝菊、籬笆菊難畫，故少畫且索價更高。本幅畫盆中種雙色菊，紅白相映，更添蜻蜓振翅花間，他耗費心思，當是求畫者出重值所致！

畫中紅菊以洋紅勾寫花瓣，繼而薄染淡紅，白菊純以墨筆寫出，偶爾幾瓣淡墨渲染以顯層次；菊葉用墨重勾淡染，筆意較縱逸；盆以淡墨花青寫出，老人嘗言，畫花卉必𒁏須有蟲鳥陪襯才更生動，故花葉間置一蜻蜓，點以藤黃，點晴之效頓生。
