註：齊白石畫棕櫚樹可追溯至一九二○年代初〈棕樹公雞〉，畫面與內容皆黼黻琳琅，流露出明顯的海派繪畫特徵。但他很快對此題材作出修訂，剔除畫面中除棕櫚外其它植物，構圖較前簡潔；棕櫚亦多用澀筆而相異於海派將其處理為平滑一類；搭配者則由公雞擴及母雞、雛雞、錦犬、麻雀等，成為富有齊氏特色的花鳥題材之一。

與本幅構圖極為類似者尚有同年另本〈棕樹麻雀〉，現藏中國美術館，皆為齊白石「棕櫚」題材成熟作品：莖部以澀筆散鋒表現「身如亂錦纏」，濃墨由下而上，筆筆觸目畫出老葉柄基部留下的痕跡，最後大筆寫葉片，酣暢淋漓，麻雀孤立樹上起點睛之妙，更將棕櫚凸顯為畫面唯一主體。
