Within the famous Cartier family it was Louis Cartier who was most passionate about watches. He gained fame when he created a wristwatch for his friend, the aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont. Thus, around 1904 the famous Santos was born, which made wristwatches suddenly a very desirable object among fashionable gentlemen. Nonetheless, the charm of pocket watches did not cease and parallel to well-known wristwatch models, such as the Tonneau, Tortue and Baignoire, pocket watches were still produced.
The present pocket watch features the day, date and month, a chronograph as well as two time zones. It is extremely rare to find a Cartier watch from this period that combines these features.
After World War I travelling was made easier: the roads slowly started to fill with cars, with the Ford T being regarded as the first affordable automobile and the airship Graf Zeppelin made its first long distance journey in 1928. Thus the men and women who used the modern ways of transport would have found great support in a pocket watch as the present piece.
