註：白石老人一生惜物，盆中剩色，零碎紙片，從不輕棄，留置案傍，隨時順手檢用，不少輕鬆愜意小品也因此狀況而生，本幅即其一。九十一歲老人作畫了無粘滯，落筆便是活脫脫生機。題曰「試色」，實是硯上尚餘顏料，不欲洗掉，遂隨手撿起零碎紙片，蘸點餘下少許藤黃、花青，調之以墨，自右下而左上，手起筆落，兩蟹俯仰前後，蟹螯相向對峙之勢，自然而生。
