上款：「德明」即熊應祚（1906-1992），湖北黃安人。畢業於北京大學，後赴美留學，獲柏克萊加州大學政治學碩士。

返國後投身外交界，獲派駐赴三藩市領事館；抗戰期間，轉職國民政府軍事委員會，曾赴緬甸擔任軍事聯絡工作。勝利後，出任駐加拿大多倫多總領事。五十年代中期返台，直至一九六二年自公職退休。後赴美，獲聘於加州三藩市大學，並於彼邦多所大學教授中國詩詞及書畫。八七年，回中國大陸，獲山東師範大學委為名譽教授。

熊氏好書畫，五十年代在台期間，曾師從黃君璧；赴美後，亦請益畫藝於張大千。他亦擅作回文詩，曾出版〈四季迴文詩集〉等著作。

註：本幅乃畫家返台定居後寫贈熊應祚。構圖以高士策杖，巖頂遠眺，下臨激濤，有「獨立蒼茫自賦詩」之意，恰與熊氏詩人身份脗合。
