秋牡丹生娑羅坪、青柯坪一帶山谷中,花似海棠,而大葉如牡丹,八九月敷花,濃艷不減永嘉竹間水際也。乙亥重九重遊太華寫此。蜀人張爰。
魏紫姚黃枉自誇,輸將秋色付寒葩;
芳心也怨繁華歇,待著殘妝鬪晚霞。
華山秋牡丹。大千居士。
爾叟社長兩教。大千弟爰。十一月朔客故都蟄廬。
〈于〉
乙亥初冬補促織、蚱蜢。非厂。
大千居士關洛紀遊,有所謂華山草木者,皆與之合作昆蟲。張之稷園水榭,為爾叟道長所見,尤許居士此幀,而深惜雕蟲小技之未能多也,因再補寫螳螂、絡緯等三品乞政。乙亥冬至月大雪節前二日鐙下。非厂弟照。

-Light fold marks could be seen on the painting. The redness on the flowers appears to be slightly faded. Otherwise, generally in good condition.

上款:「爾叟」即湯爾和(1878-1940),杭州人。先後留學日本、德國,獲醫學博士學位。民國時期行醫,復投身政界,歷任教育總長、內務部總長等職。「蘆溝橋事變」後,投敵,出任北平偽臨時政府要職。湯氏縱橫政壇多年,亦好文藝,擅書法,與舊京藝壇諸家多有往還,如傅增湘、張大千、于非闇等,或有詩唱和,或以作品寫贈。
註:本幅具大千、非闇兩家先後題跋,從所述內容可依序整理出創作過程。畫作源自一九三五年大千重訪太華之行,寫畢於「重九」之時,攜返舊京後,由摯交于非闇添補草蟲,此乃三十年代中期兩人經常合作之習慣,畫上鈐「大千非闇合作」,正是此段時期之印証。
同年十二月初,「張大千關洛紀遊畫展」於北平中山公園水榭舉行,于氏題跋於「大雪節前二日鐙下」,即公曆十二月六日,展覽結束後翌日晚上。又稱此畫「張之稷園水榭」,即當時展場,由此可推知或屬展品之一。應物主湯爾和之請,他再添補螳螂、絡緯於其上。湯氏乃政壇名宿,人脈廣通,在故都文化界淵源深厚,大千、非闇等尊之甚隆。如淪陷之時,大千進退躊躇,皆多次問計於他。故二人兩度合作,寫成本幅,稱曰「社長」、「道長」,皆以藝訂交,非關名位尊卑也。
