Iosif Solomonovich Shkolnik (1883-1926) is perhaps best known for his theatrical designs, including the costumes and sets for the tragedy ‘Vladimir Mayakovsky’ on which he collaborated with Pavel Filonov and Olga Rozanova and for his work with Kazimir Malevich on Velimir Khlebnikov and Alexei Kruchenykh's "Victory over the Sun." After 1918, his work broadened to include designs for large-scale public spectacles staged during the celebration of revolutionary holidays. In 1919 he was named director of the Petrograd Institute of Decorative Arts and contributed several designs for production at the State Porcelain Manufactory. For another example of this design, see Sotheby's London, 1 December 2005, lot 172. We are grateful to Dr. Ekaterina Khmelnitskaya for assistance in cataloguing this lot.
