Gilbert Charles Stuart (1755-1828) is regarded as one of the most preeminent portraitists in American history. His most recognized work is an unfinished portrait of George Washington, which he used as a template for other paintings and is the portrait seen on the United States one dollar bill. The present lot features an engraving of Stuart’s Washington at Dorchester Heights (1806) which hangs in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The painting commemorates Washington’s victory and occupation of Dorchester Heights, south of Boston. The occupation of Dorchester allowed the Colonial Army to fire artillery upon Boston and force the British troops to retreat. Several copies were painted of the Dorchester Heights portrait, notably by Stuart’s daughter, Jane.
The watch is additionally engraved with a presentation to John D. Ottiwell, dated 1864, who was an Alderman in New York City, complimenting the New York state seal engraved to the case.
