Condition
Overall this picture in very nice state. The canvas has been relined and the work is in a carved gilt wood frame. The sitters hand has retouches visible under UV, as well as a few very minor scattered in the collar, but the hands and majority of composition have no retouches at all. Varnish is milky and could be replaced to great effect.

This portrait relates loosely to the full-length standing portrait of Burdett painted by Lawrence in circa 1793, now in the National Portrait Gallery, London.
Francis Burdett succeeded his grandfather Sir Robert Burdett (1716-1797) as 5th baronet in 1797, inheriting estates at Foremark and Bramcote, Warwickshire. In 1800 he also inherited Ramsbury from his aunt. He married Sophia, the youngest daughter and coheir of the London banker Thomas Coutts (1735-1822). He entered Parliament in 1796 and would go on to become an influential radical politician, championin𒈔g free speech, personal liberty, the harsh treatment of prisoners, as well as other reforms.
