Condition

The canvas has a modern glue relining and is slightly pressed in the background from this process, although the image reads very well. Overall the paint surface appears to be largely well preserved beneath a clear varnish. There is some abrasion in the darks in the background but the figure is well preserved with clearly defined detail. There is extensive scattered retouching throughout the background. There are more minor retouchings through drapery, to a scratch or minor repaired tear measuring 2 in. running vertically through the wrist. There is another possible retouched tear 4 in. horizontally through the drapery at the center of the lower section. There is some very minor scattered retouching through forehead and cheek. There is a line of fine retouching 1 in. vertically through the sitter's chin and a line of strengthened retouching in her jaw. The painting requires no further work, and is ready to hang in its present state and presents a good strong image. Offered in a carved gilt wood frame.
