Battle scene: under a slightly yellowed varnish. Paint losses and scuffing at edges, but otherwise the paint surface has been well retained and there is very good preservation of detail in ships and water. Under UV light: some scattered small retouches in sky and clouds. Storm scene: losses and scuffing at edges with some larger losses near bottom edge and at lower right and left corners. A few very tiny losses in sky and one in water at far right. Aside from these, the paint surface is well retained and detail is very good. Under UV light: nothing fluoresces.

The subjects of these impressive and unusually large-scale coppers are typical of the dramatic marine scenes favored in the 18th century.  The first depicts vessels flying flags of the Dutch ensign floundering at the coastline in a violent storm, while the second shows a ship in flames in the midst of a battle.
