Condition
The canvas has been laid down on Masonite board and the paint surface has been pressed as a result. Detail remains quite good overall and the painting still reads well and presents an attractive and decorative image. There are scattered scratches and abrasions to the surface and a number of old, discolored retouches can be seen with the naked eye. These are mostly in the background areas: at upper left above woman's head, in area to left of boy's head, and at upper right corner. There is a tiny paint loss at upper center. Slight thinness to some of the darks such as in the basket and the shadowed area at bottom under the ledge. Examination under UV light reveals some reinforcements of the folds in woman's skirt and apron, and some in her black bodice. Other retouches to boy's costume; there is scattered inpainting of craquelure which is mostly in the background areas. Other retouches along the bottom. This painting could be hung as is, but a re-addressing of some of the old visible retouches would certainly improve the appearance.
Offered in an elaborately carved and gilt wood frame with nicks and losses (evidence of possible old worm damage has rendered some parts of the frame very fragile).
