Acquired by the late owner in Smithtown, Long Island, NY, circa 1965.
Condition
The canvas has a modern glue relining. To the naked eye, the paint surface overall is well preserved beneath a fresh clear varnish and has not been pressed in the relining process. In raking light, two repaired and retouched compound tears are faintly visible in the sky. These are more apparent under ultra violet light. There is one of approximately 7 by 7 inches running horizontally from the edge of the bell tower to the main body of the church and upwards through the architecture. There is another running vertically from the facade of the church, upwards into the sky about 12 inches. An L-shaped repaired tear of approximately 3 by 3 inches in is the sky above the roof. There is a further repaired damage of approximately 4 by 1 inches through the clouds in the sky at the left side. There is another repaired L-shaped damage, approximately 4 by 3 inches running through the brick work at the right side of the façade and further retouching to the cornice above the entrance. It should be noted that while visible clearly under ultraviolet light, these repaired damages are not distracting to the naked eye and only visible in the sky. There are minor, scattered retouches here and there in the lower section. The painting has been very sensitively restored and requires no further work. It is ready to hang in its current state. Offered in a modern, simply carved gilt wood frame.

Leo von Klenze is best known as an architect and one of the most important proponents of Greek Revival architecture in Germany during the first half of the 19thcentury. He worked as court architect from 1816 and, from 1830, as director of building for King Ludwig I of Bavaria. In addition to his architectural work, Von Klenze was also an accomplished painter and draughtsman. He travelled to Italy frequently where he made numerous sketches of the landscape and architecture.
