註：吳清源，名泉，以字行，福建福州人。十一歲即以「圍棋神童」出入段祺瑞府邸及北平來今雨軒棋席。十四歲東渡扶桑，成為職業棋手，此後數十年，以其明快輕妙之棋風屢挫強敵，稱雄彼邦棋壇，雖自謙婉拒「棋聖」稱號，實乃日本昭和時期圍棋界無冕之王。

本幅寫於一九三三年，時留日五載，書法仍流露十九歲少年之稚氣，然此時已在當地棋壇嶄露頭角，是年升為五段。

本幅附便條，上書「支那棋客吳清源之書。橋爪善七氏近善之，即揮毫。橋爪淳一氏所贈。昭和八年七月廿二日。」橋爪不可考，似為於彼邦對吳清源頗有照拂者，題於本幅寫成不久之時。
