賓虹五十歲創設宙合齋古玩鋪，曾於致友人書札中以「綢繆古懽，晉接時俊」形容之。一九三九年詩人瞿宣穎亦有句「畫伯多情寫古懽」贈賓虹，本幅即取意於此。
