款識:(湯)自有千秋業,恒多未竟心。豹皮嗟片帋,駿骨感知音。悲樂花前夢,東西枝上禽。定文誰慰汝,握管一哀呤。周保緒教授寫生,宗宋人勾勒法。此紙勾已而未設色,子堅偶覩之于廣陵,重為故人遺墨,亟付裝池,而使予補成之,以予亦保緒友也。予聞保緒遺稿為鹽城某生所得,不知其人,視子堅何如,因并題一詩奉正。辛丑(1841)二月八日,貽汾并識。鈐印:「貽汾私印」
題跋:(周)白骨亦可肉,將軍下筆心。二難今始并,雙笠奮知音。君是生春手,我如垂翼禽。杈枒憶標格,梅月擁孤吟。雨生都督設色竟,並系以詩,因和其韻,時道光辛丑(1841)二月八日也,詒樸題并記。鈐印:「子堅」
(周)此家保緒仿宋寫生幅也,輪廓成而設色未就,兒子涑得之邗上,藏笥中三年矣。今春始請雨生都督足成之,遂為兩美。同日子堅又記。鈐印:「周詒樸印」、「子堅」
裱邊題跋:(黃)吾師幼歲即博通藝事,惟學畫最晚,致力亦最深。然專工山水,其花鳥人物,每與隱山合作者居多。此幅勾勒而未率業,得歸子堅,遂為完璧。白骨既肉,而且相與歌詠嗟悼之,文人之所望於同氣者,豈有既哉?辛丑(1841)三月,子堅來揚州,出以屬題,敬識數語而歸之。高諒黃樹賓。
(吳)保緒先生宏林碩學,資性絕人,每習一藝,藝必窮高極深,思力交至,不作弟二人想。初依安吳法作書,時出新意,後事箸述,稍輟業,自謂莫及。遂併力作畫,一以宋人為宗,晚年就官淮陰,更不多作,故友朋得者亦少。此幅乃未竟稿本,子堅雅重故人筆跡,極屬雨生都督傅色,裝而藏之,其用情有出於翰墨外者。道光辛丑(1841)穀雨後三日,吳廷颺謹題。鈐印:「吳廷颺印」、「熙載」
(陳)保翁著《晉略》時,嘗以畫酬人寫稿,於是書手所藏誇富於吾輩。昔以此事與保翁戲爭,今子堅出示此幀,恍憶笑言在耳,何待山陽聞笛,感觸當年。鄱陽陳方海。鈐印:「陳方海印」、「伯斿」
(楊)保翁早負文武才,司鐸淮上,中歲僑揚、僑金陵,□焉於畫。晚箸《晉略》,畫始稀,故成者益鮮。雨生都督亦退居金陵,先生之故人也。故子堅倩傅色以成之,□誌斯愛。道光廿一年(1841)閏月,楊亮謹題。鈐印:「臣亮」
(包)止庵嗜畫,攻之至力,積廿餘寒暑,然不能人物、屋宇,每作之輒,為通局之累。此花樹筆力遒麗,轉側有姿致,而翎毛亦殊穩洽,唯氣稍膩。殆宋恥夫所補,非止庵所作,雨生設色。若樹杪兩朶,雖謂出止庵手可已。子堅藏此,屬題拳拳,故友世臣,尤不忍欺泉下至好也。癸卯(1843)正初,包世臣記。鈐印:「倦翁」
(魏)史藁一編落吾手,畫藁枯枝君合有,何處覓此支離叟。子堅來絜園觀保翁《晉略》原藁,并出此畫共賞,因題。時道光廿三載(1843)孟春,方送子堅淮北之行,魏原。鈐印:「原」

註:湯氏晚年致仕寓居江寧,與當地文人訂交深厚,其中與周濟更是莫逆之交。周濟,字保緒,晚號止庵,蘇州荊溪人。曾任淮安府學教授,常州詞派人之一,通音律,好作詞,習兵略,與湯氏志趣相投,故曾把其宅院春水院分出一半共居。周氏仙遊後,湯氏以五律六首哭之,翌年其子於廣陵覓得亡父仿宋人花鳥勾勒本,未著色,遂請湯氏填色補成此畫,並邀其父之好友弟子題跋,緬懷故人。湯貽汾《琴隱園詩集》,卷二十五,便記錄了此題畫詩及箇中原委。
