In 1938, the Duchess of Windsor suggested the idea of the Zip necklace to Van Cleef & Arpels' artistic director, Renée Puissant. She designed a zip composed of diamonds mounted in platinum but it took several years to perfect one of the most prestigious design of the Maison. In 1951, the first model of a Zip necklace was presented to the public; it was an adjustable model that could be worn open around the neck or closed as a bracelet.
