The work is in overall very good condition. Upon close observation, a very faint water stain is visible at the center (below tree branch). No restoration has been detected.

Chen Wen Hsi is highly celebrated for his paintings that are inspired by gibbons. His paintings on the subject demonstrate his impressive skill in portraying movement set within a naturalistic scene. The artist kept six gibbons as pets in his home, and studied the physique and character of the animals often in close range for long periods of time.

The self-titled work Gibbons showcases two of the animals in gleeful interaction. The ওbold, solid figures add weight and vigor to the gibbons, bringing a feeling of gravity to the work, and intensifying the energy of the animals’ motion. The gibbon in mid-swing, clasping onto a tree branch and seemingly ready to spring off to its next destinations, entertaining the audience with its animated antics. The other gibbon looks on below, eager to participate and join his friend. The gibbons in the present work with their playful banter that subsequently provides an enjoyable experience for the viewer.

The artist’s keen understanding of showing objects in motion and at rest, as well as expressing different levels of energy, is reflected greatly in his ink paintings of animals. I♏n the present work, he enlivens the wildlife scene by highlighting the animal’s soft fur together with the wilderness of the landscape. This dist🦩inction places focus on the theme of the gibbons themselves interacting with the natural habitat. The portrayal of the cliff and branches adds a sense of elevation, thus freeing up space for the gibbons to take flight.
