The hairpin is in overall good condition. There are extensive areas of calcification as visible in the catalogue photo.

此簪採明朝流行簪式，簪鈕盤曲小螭，簪身淺浮雕螭龍，曲身捲尾，鬃毛盡現，構圖繁而不褥，琢工細膩入微，猶若游絲，溢明代中晚期典風。簪身中央直琢陽文篆體「文中子贊陸子剛製」。據其工藝風格，年代與明人筆下之陸子剛活躍時間吻合，屬罕見可推證為陸子剛之品。
早於十六世紀晚期，同代文人已有載陸子剛治玉之技精，例如萬曆十九年（1591年）刊明高濂之《遵生八牋》中評吳中陸子剛所製玉器「法古舊形，滑熱可愛」、「工緻侔古，今多效製」。及至崇禎十五年（1642年）刊《太倉州志》又載：「五十年前州人有陸子剛者，用刀雕刻，遂擅絕今。所遺玉簪，價一枝值五、六十金」。據文獻，𝐆陸子剛製玉技♏絕同儕，所製玉器，時人慕之，甚至納入宮藏。
子剛之玉，歷代仿學者眾，廣見子剛款器，然真品少之又少，古已難求。鄧淑蘋在其專文中，仔細研究台北國立故宮博物院清宮舊藏子剛款玉器後，指出陸氏所製，工緻細膩，但或刻意在落款時以砣仿銼刀痕，以營造「侔古」之撲拙，致使古人誤以為子剛以昆吾刀直接刻玉，詳見其文〈探索「子剛」晚明江南玉雕迷團的再思〉，《故宮文物月刊》，2011年12月刊，第345期，頁46-62。鄧淑蘋在文中寫及院藏五件很有可能出自陸子剛之手的玉器，當中有一黃玉荷葉蟠螭水盛（頁56，圖6，藏品編號：故玉3163），器身所琢陽文篆體「子剛」二字，古拙之風，與此簪款識相類。另一青玉花卉螭紋圓盒（頁57，圖8，藏品編號：故玉5950），盒底琢三行篆體陽文「文中子贊陸子剛製」，無論文字、篆書寫法，均與此款同，唯圓盒字體略較圓滑。此簪兩行篆書小字平均不過0.3公分寬，僅故宮圓盒上署款之一半（據出版拓🍬本，粗略推算每字約0.6公分寬），誠工細入微也。該院藏另一晚♏明螭紋玉簪，見《敬天格物：中國歷代玉器導讀》，國立故宮博物院，台北，2011年，頁137，圖7-2-9，藏品編號：購玉044，琢陽文「子剛」二字篆款，可作比較。另可參考江蘇洞庭東山槎灣明萬曆許裕甫墓出土白玉螭紋簪，現存南京博物院，形制與此極近，除子剛款外，更書有「文彭賞」字，文彭乃明中期吳門畫家，與陸子剛時期相若。
