As visible in the catalogue photos, there are shallow nicks to the edges of the carving, the most significant measuring approx. 0.6 cm to the snout. The figure is otherwise in overall good condition with light pitting to the stone.

如此玉所琢之四肢舒展臥犬，始見於有唐一朝，唐例可參考《中國肖生玉雕》，香港藝術館，香港，1996年，編號68。如此件姿態閑靜肖生之玉，宋至清初盛行，或為鎮紙、或為清玩。此犬栩栩如生，匠人且巧用玉色，背深褐而腹淡黃，更添其趣。

熙墀收藏有一類例，展於香港市政局與敏求精舍聯合主辦《中國玉雕》，香港，1983年，編號136，後售於香港蘇富比2010年4月8日，編號1987。邵維錫收藏且有一例，展於《玲瓏玉雕：玉人，玉獸，玉飾》，香港大學美術博物館，香港，1995年，編號79。還有一黃玉臥犬，先後由 Joan Barrow 夫人、Cunliffe 勛爵伉儷、瑪麗及莊智博遞藏，收錄於東方陶瓷學會展覽《Chinese Jade throughout theꦛ Ages》，倫敦，1975年，編號251，後售於香港蘇富比2005年10月23日，編號20。知柔齋舊藏也有一白玉例，斷代為宋，也展於《玲瓏玉雕》，前述出處，編號85，後售於香港蘇富比2008年10月8日，編號2312。另見一例，售於香港蘇富比2010年4月8日，編號2056。
