This box and cover is in good condition, with minor splits to the rim and a split to the rim of the cover, There are areas of the design that has been coloured in a red pigment.

According to the Royal Danish Kunstkammer inventory of 1674, boxes of this type were made in the 17th century. Compare two similar boxes illustrated in Ethnographic Objects in the Royal Danish Kunsthammer 1650-1800, Nationalmuseet, Copenhagen, 1980, pls EBc43 and EBc44; and a further two examples illustrated in Chinese Ivories from the Shang to the Qing, British Museum, London, 1984, pls 186 and 187.
