王天德是1980年代在上海提倡書畫實驗性創作的先驅,逾三十年來專注於重新定義傳統水意畫象的不同方式。王氏就讀浙江美術學院,當時谷文達在學院任教並開創國畫的徹底變革,而在這個發展時期,王氏將立體元素融入別開生面的創作手法,例如染墨紙本裝置及層層疊起的媒材。
《新中國服裝之三》遊走於抽象與具象之𓃲間,玄黑筆墨飛揚,勾勒出人體輪廓,紙上烙印著無從辨認的書法。文人寄情山水,喜在畫中題詩,而王氏用煙在紙上燙出字句,💧倒似回味這逐漸消失的文人傳統,手法卻不無諷刺。波士頓美術館及香港藝術館之館藏皆有相類作品。
