王天德是1980年代在上海提倡書畫實驗性創作的先驅，逾三十年來專注於重新定義傳統水意畫象的不同方式。王氏就讀浙江美術學院，當時谷文達在學院任教並開創國畫的徹底變革，而在這個發展時期，王氏將立體元素融入別開生面的創作手法，例如染墨紙本裝置及層層疊起的媒材。
《新中國服裝之三》遊走於抽象與具象之𓃲間，玄黑筆墨飛揚，勾勒出人體輪廓，紙上烙印著無從辨認的書法。文人寄情山水，喜在畫中題詩，而王氏用煙在紙上燙出字句，💧倒似回味這逐漸消失的文人傳統，手法卻不無諷刺。波士頓美術館及香港藝術館之館藏皆有相類作品。
