1935年生於杭州的曾宓是新文人運動的重要人物，在繪畫生涯中即使面對中國政治及文化的動盪環境，但仍堅持投身於藝術。著名畫廊經紀人金董建平女士談到「他的畫作別具詩意，具書法特色，令人想起他喜愛的清朝畫家蒲華，而他曾以蒲華為題撰寫多篇論文。」他在1984年正式成為浙江美術學院的畫家時，已發展出一套描繪自由的獨特畫風，而自由對那時的他來說只是奢想。其寫意風格富有情感，在理論及實踐方面與黃賓虹的作品特質相似。
曾宓以山水畫見稱，是次拍賣呈獻的《田園》（拍品編號557）、《山居圖》（拍品編號557）及《山傍》（拍品編號514）蘊涵細密的筆觸線條與變化多端的墨𒀰色，皆是獨特的典範作品。大膽用色配以平靜的構圖毫不做作，猶如表現主義藝術家埃米爾·諾爾德作品中的明豔景致，同樣平易近人。在藝術創作中，曾宓從不抗拒傳統，卻成為了二十世紀傳統變革的一分子。其作品曾於多個重要的國際聯展中展出，包括香港藝術館舉辦的「二十世紀中國繪畫」展覽，1996至1997年間於新加坡、倫敦及科隆巡迴展出，以及1998年紐約古根漢美術館和畢爾包古根漢美術館舉辦的「中國五千年」展覽。
