公元二世紀時，鐵劍由中國傳至日本，此件劍首原本便安放於一把鐵劍之上。傳統的劍首與劍身由同一塊生鐵打造。直到四世紀時，鍍金銅劍首才從中國或韓國傳入日本。
六世紀時，鎏金銅劍首多飾有龍鳳圖案。佐藤寒山在《日本美術系列》中便載有東京國立博物館收藏的一類例，卷10，東京，196꧟6年。劍被形容為日本早期歷史中的「三神器」之一，見證日本大和時代的一統偉業。
